BEEF RECALL DOES NOT AFFECT OUR STORES

The United States Department of Agriculture issued a voluntary recall for beef products packed at the Hallmark/Westland Packing facility in Chino, California.  Our wholesale supplier, Unified Grocers, does not purchase from this packing facility.  In addition, this recall only affects retailers in northern and southern California, and not Washington retailers.  

 IMPORT FOOD SAFETY PLANS DETAILED
 
With the public concern over recent increases in recalls and food safety issues, a group was formed at the federal level to review the safety of the US food supply and the role that imported food products play in that supply.
 
From that group's months-long review of the entire supply chain, a number of recommendations have been made that are regulatory and do not require Congressional action.  The Food Marketing Institute (the grocery industry's professional organization) will be working to help develop and implement these recommendations in an effective manner.
 
Among the recommendations are the following:
  • create new and strengthen existing safety standards
  • verify compliance of foreign producers with US safety and security standards through certification
  • expand lab capacity and develop rapid test methods for swift identification of hazards
  • maximize the effectiveness of product recalls
  • use technology to expedite consumer notification of product recalls
  • strengthen penalities and take strong enforcement actions to ensure accountability
